Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has hinted at his intention to contest the Ejisu by-elections when the Electoral Commission opens up nominations.

Kwesi Nyantakyi said he will be contesting on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Nyantakyi gave the hint in an interview in Kumasi at the introduction of the New Patriotic Party’s Ashanti Regional Campaign team.

The Ejisu by-election will definitely come on, but the timetable has not been published yet so we don’t know those who want to contest. Since I come from there and I have the right to contest, at the right time, we’ll see what will happen,” he said.

Despite his intention to contest, Mr. Nyantakyi admitted the constituents are still grieving the passing of the incumbent MP and deputy finance minister, John Kumah.

“But at the moment, we are mourning the demise of a very dear son of the constituency. The Member of Parliament is a big loss to the constituency and let’s see what happens after the one week,” Nyantakyi stated.

Nyantakyi, however, called the rank and file to offer the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, peace of mind when choosing a running mate.

“I think it is a prerogative of the flagbearer to select the running mate, so let’s leave it to him. At the right time, he’ll do that.”

Parliament has yet to formally proclaim the Ejisu Constituency seat vacant to pave the way for a by-election in the constituency. Following the death of the Member of Parliament for the constituency, the names of interested candidates to succeed the late John Ampontuah Kumah are emerging.
