Some of the participants at the meeting[/caption] Kidnappings, armed robberies, political vigilantism and terrorism dominated discussions at a top national security dialogue to sharpen efforts at improving the level of security in the country. Security chiefs and experts as well as civil society organisations and government officials gathered at the Peduase Lodge in Aburi for the meeting which is the fourth in series by the government to improve the security architecture of Ghana.
A statement from the government at the end of day one indicated the meeting focused on examining the recent spate of kidnappings in the country which has caused fear and panic among residents of Western Region where most kidnapping cases have been recorded since August 2018. Political vigilantism, which has become an albatross on the neck of Ghana and led to a number of violent incidences in recent times, was also examined by the security chiefs. Violence acts of political vigilantism has become headache for the Police Service as some of its officers fear it could threaten the country’s peace as well as the 2020 general elections if it is not immediately nipped in the bud. A roadmap on how to tackle these challenges is expected at the end of the meeting Friday. Government sources described the meeting as crucial in developing acceptable methods for tackling contemporary security challenges in the country. Government officials attending the meeting are Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Marfo, National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah and the Attorney General and Minister for Justice Gloria Akuffo.
