Keep your wards under surveillance – NACOB urges parents

Tramadol is an opioid pain medication used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain but its abuse is on the rise in Ghana[/caption] The Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) has urged parents to keep an eye on the activities of their children to ensure they do not engage in using illicit drugs.   It also encourages guardians, clergy and the community at large to do same. A statement from NACOB marking the 2018 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking wants “parents to take up their full responsibility in helping shape the lives of our youth”. The theme for this year’s World Drug Day is: “Listen First – Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe” In the view of NACOB, “When parents and their children become sensitive to each other’s feelings, it will go a long way to build a mutual trust and confidence leading the children to naturally preserve their family bonds.” NACOB also used the occasion to caution the general public especially the youth against the excessive abuse of tramadol and cough mixtures containing components of codeine. According to NACOB, such abuses “give similar effects of narcotics substance”.
