The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), ex-President John Mahama has met one of his main contenders for the position, Dr Kwabena Duffuor, to discuss the future of the party.

Mr Mahama said they also discussed the 2024 elections.

“It was great meeting with Dr Kwabena Duffuor as we discussed the future of our party and the upcoming 2024 elections. It is important for us to come together and work towards unity and the growth of our party,” he posted on Facebook, Monday December 4, 2023.

Mr. Mahama also used the opportunity to urge the rank and file of the party to unite in their efforts towards the bid to recapture power.

“Let’s focus on our common goals and aspirations to build the Ghana we want together,” he said.

Dr Duffuor was touted as the main challenger to Mr. Mahama in the run up to the NDC’s flagbearer race held in May, 2023. However, he withdrew from the race barely 24 hours to the election, citing irregularities with the voters’ register.

“…Despite the assurances given to myself and my team by the Chairman of the party, the executives of the party, in a complete and unacceptable breach of faith, went ahead to convene a press conference announcing that the elections would go ahead tomorrow, without having resolved the concerns surrounding the voters register as decided at the meeting of the Council of Elders”

“My concerns that the party is not ready to conduct free and fair election is evident for all to see. Taking part in such would be akin to knowingly drinking from a poisoned calabash. After consulting with my support base nationwide, I have been left with no choice but to withdraw from the Presidential election as I cannot contest in an election which is blatantly fraught with irregularities regardless of all my efforts to draw attention to same,” he announced at a press conference held on May 12, 2023.
