Embattled National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko has given the strongest indication yet that he remains the chairman of his party although he has been “suspended” from that position by the National Executive Committee of the party.

He was spotted with the NPP’s team at the Electoral Commission’s forum on the voters register. Speaking in an interview with journalists Mr. Afoko said “Our party has always spearheaded reforms… reforms for the benefit of our country and that’s what we are here to do today.”

Asked in what capacity he was representing the party Mr. Afoko said “what do you know me to be? I’m here as the Chairman of the NPP, I’m here leading the team to ensure that the views of our party are heard, to ensure that we push through the reforms that we require for next year’s elections.”

The National Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party suspended Paul Afoko as its national chairman following what has been described as ‘misconduct’ and his ‘continual refusal’ from attending to several calls by the Council of Elders of the party.

Following the suspension however he has insisted that he is still at post as national chairman of the party and issued a congratulatory statement to the newly elected president of Ivory Coast, Alassana Ouatarra, in his capacity as NPP Chair.

Although the party is insisting that Mr. Afoko is on suspension until further notice, the latter still carries himself in same capacity. There has been a back and forth and violence at the party’s headquarters which led to the damaging of the General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong’s vehicle.
