Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, is hopeful that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will assent to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024, also referred to as an anti-LGBTGQ+ bill.

He said the President has not shown any support for LGBTQ activities and for that matter, he believes that once the bill gets to the President, he will sign it.

Miracles Aboagye asked Ghanaians to be receptive to criticism of the bill, pointing out that since laws are imperfect, it is necessary to adjust them to better serve the needs of the nation.

“The President has never said he will not sign the bill. So I believe that he will sign it when it gets to him,” said Mr. Aboagye in an interview on Accra-based JoyNews.

These remarks come in the wake of Dr. Bawumia’s public rejection of LGBT+ activities during his address to the Muslim community at Kumasi on Thursday, April 11, as they observed Eid prayers.

This will be the leader of the NPP’s first public declaration of his opposition to LGBTQ+ practices in the country.

Sign the anti-gay bill if Akufo-Addo travels – Dafeamekpor tells Bawumia

With unwavering clarity, Dr. Bawumia condemned LGBTQ+ activities, relating his own convictions to Islamic teachings and Ghanaian societal and cultural norms.

“I will like to take this opportunity to personally comment on the raging issue of LGBTQ in Ghana. First of all, it is important to note that our cultural and societal norms and values as Ghanaians frown on the practice of homosexuality,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

His remarks underscore the significant influence of cultural and religious beliefs in shaping public opinion on sensitive issues such as LGBTQ+ rights.

The Association of Progressive Muslims, Ghana, has welcomed the position of Vice President Dr. Bawumia.

“Good news for mother Ghana and we’re so glad Alhaji Bawumia has listened to our call finally,” the Association wrote in an April 11 statement.

However, pressure is being mounted on Dr. Bawumia to convince his boss, President Afufo-Addo, to sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

The South Dayi Member of Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has therefore advised Dr. Bawumia to sign the bill into law in the event President Akufo-Addo travels outside the country.
