The application for certiorari filed by lawyers for Charles Antwi was upheld by the High Court. The man in question was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit court for admitting that he wanted to kill the president.
The new decision means Charles Antwi should be released from prison custody. Many expressed shock at the quick conviction of Mr. Antwi, whom some have also described as ‘mentally challenged.”
On the day he was sent to court, it was to find out whether a case could be brought against him so he could be in lawful custody only for him to be slapped with a 10 year sentence.
According to the presiding judge, J.A Okwabi, the “young man was wrongfully charged” adding that he should be “sent to the Accra Psychiatric hospital to be checked.”
The convict was not in court but credible information has it that the paper works for his release from the Nsawam prison is being worked on.
Charles Antwi, 36 was arrested for visiting President Mahama’s church with a gun, to assassinate him and take over to become president. According to him he has visited the church four times and was arrested on the last day on which he was coming to execute his plan only to meet the absence of the president.
