The High Court will today [July 3] decide whether to find the Inspector General of Police, David Asante Apeatu, the Director General of the Police CID, Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah and other guilty of contempt of court.
The three have defied a court order to grant a murder suspect, Gregory Afoko, bail, and allegedly refused to appear before court to justify why they have continuously detained the suspect in custody.
Afoko is being tried for the murder of the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Adams Mahama.
He was granted bail three months ago by the High Court presided over by Justice Jennifer Dodoo and has since fulfilled the necessary bail conditions, but was not released.
An appeal by the Attorney General to stay execution of the bail was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on April 15
It was the second time the Attorney General made an attempt stop the bail granted the suspect but lost after the first one on Friday March 22, 2019 was thrown out by the High Court presided over by Mr. Justice George Buadi.
Despite losing the appeals, they respondents continued to hold the suspect in custody, prompting the lawyers for the suspect to initiate contempt proceedings against the three, including the IGP boss and his CID Director General.
The case was heard without the respondents personally showing up in court, something the judge had cause to complain, and on June 19 issued a final warning to them to personal appear before the court for the ruling.
The judge warned the court will be forced to order the Interior Minister to produce them.
