Former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) Ivor Kobina Greenstreet has been elected as the flagbearer of the party for the 2016 elections.

Mr Greenstreet, a private legal practitioner, beat competition from former National Chairman Samia Yaba Nkrumah – who is also daughter of the first president of Ghana – perennial aspirant Bright Akwetey and Joseph Agyapong to emerge winner of the race.

At a congress held at the International Trade Fair Center on Saturday, January 30, delegates of the leading Nkrumahist party handed Mr Greenstreet an overwhelming majority.

The former CPP parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency polled 1,288 votes to clinch victory.

His closest contender, Ms Nkrumah, who is a former Member of Parliament for Jomoro Constituency, polled 579 votes.

Joe Agyapong and Bright Akwetey came third and fourth respectively with 83 and 42 votes.

The win for Mr Greenstreet makes him the first physically challenged person to vie for the presidency.

He has been seen as one of the outspoken figures in the opposition party. His address at the 2014 congress of the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) made him both friends and enemies.

While friends hailed his bravery at voicing out the challenges of the average Ghanaian then, enemies thought he had overstayed his welcome inside the Baba Yara Sports Stadium by his comments.
