Statistics available at the Ghana Revenue Authority shows that the Ashanti region contributes less than 4% of the total tax revenue collected annually.

The Commissioner-General of Ghana Revenue Authority, Mr Emmanuel Kofi Nti disclosed this at the Ghana Revenue Authority Tax Campaign launch in the Ashanti region.

Mr Kofi Nti described the situation as worrying. The Ashanti is the home to a number of big companies in the country and several mining firms.

He said, “one would have expected that as the region with the second highest local government economy after Greater Accra, the contribution to tax revenue would be high but the picture is different”.

He therefore called on Ghanaians to support the GRA to mobilise enough revenue so that government can meet it’s part of social contract through the provision of  infrastructure and other basic amenities as well as for the citizenry.

“So if we are expecting GHc100 from government, we should ask ourselves, if what we pay is more than what we are expecting,” he remarked.

Mr Kofi Nti indicated that, the GRA Special Revenue Mobilization Task Force will be spending some few days in the region as part of the education campaign to shore up the revenue collection in the region.
