Women in Maritime West and Central Africa, an initiative of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is aimed at promoting and empowering women in the Maritime industry.
Members of the association who are located in countries within the sub-region include accomplished women who have influenced the development of the maritime industry in many ways.
The Association aims to integrate women in the mainstream maritime activities and promote women’s access to the sector through education, training and career opportunities.
The Marketing and Public Affairs Manager at the Tema Port, Abena Serwaa Opoku Fosu at the presentation ceremony, said women formed about 2 percent of the population in the sector thereby drawing the need to push women in the industry to a higher height.
She stated the Authority is key on the rise of women in the industry and would support women’s goal to mentor more ladies to take up leadership roles and grow.
President of Women in Maritime West and Central Africa Association, (WIMOWCA) Ms. Sylvia Asana Dauda Owu commended the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority for the support and stated that the equipments donated will go a long way to facilitate the work of the association for the advancement of women in the maritime industry in the sub-region.
