After the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) called off its three-week old industrial action on Friday, August 21, government has announced its commitment to resume negotiations today.
The two parties are expected to return to the negotiation table today Monday, August 24.
Government pulled out of negotiations last week, citing the doctors’ withdrawal of emergency and out-patient department services, a situation that is starkly against the labour laws of the country.
The medical practitioners had accused the government of acting in bad faith in their demands for a codified Conditions of Service.
There were calls from several quarters including offices of former heads of state for the doctors to resume work and return to the table.
The National Labour Commission (NLC) directed the two parties – government and the doctors – to resume talks in order to report back to it on Monday.
In a statement on Friday to announce the suspension of their action, the doctors said they will pursue the demand for service conditions to its logical conclusion.
The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu, has welcomed the decision by the doctors and promised that government’s negotiation team led by Deputy Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson will meet the leadership of GMA on Monday to continue where they left off.
