Charles Komi Kudzordzi declared Western Togoland independent on November 16, 2019 at Ho in the Volta Region[/caption] The state security agencies have taken steps to ensure that persons who recently declared their independence from Ghana are dealt with according to law, the Information Minister has stated. This comes in the wake of videos circulating that Homeland Study Group Foundation over the weekend declared their long-awaited secession from Ghana. Octogenarian Charles Komi Kudzordi last Saturday led the Foundation to declare Western Togoland an independent state. The Western Togoland area covers Volta Region, Oti Region and parts of Northern, North East and Upper East regions. Immediately after the declaring the independence, which had originally been scheduled to be done on May 9, 2017, Mr Kudzordzi was whisked away in a waiting car in the Volta Region capital of Ho. Papavi Hogbedetor, as he is popularly called, together with nine others have faced treason charges at the courts since 2017 over their moves to declare independence. But the case was discontinued by the High Court last July as per a request filed by the Attorney General. The accused were consequently discharged. But after the move on Saturday, the police declared all involved particularly Papavi Hogbedetor wanted. He is said to have escaped to Togo.
The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, in a statement on Monday, November 18, urged the public to ignore the group and its motives. He stated that Ghana remains a sovereign state “which has not ceded any part of its territory to any person or group of persons”. Mr Oppong Nkrumah said the security agencies “remain in firm charge of Ghana’s territory and encourage all persons to continue with their daily activities normally”.
