Gov’t sets up 10-member committee to design ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ Charter

Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Maafo will chair the committee[/caption] Government has set up a 10-member committee tasked with the responsibility to work out a Charter on Ghana Beyond Aid. The committee is expected to be chaired by Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Maafo. It will comprise a member each from the ministries of Finance, Planning and Employment and Labour Relations, three members from organized labour and three members from the Private Enterprise Federation (PEF). Announcing the decision at the 2018 May Day celebrations in Kumasi, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo tasked the committee to complete work within six months. “The Charter will, then, be subjected to scrutiny and debate by Parliament, and adopted as a follow up to the Co-ordinated Programme of Economic and Social Development Policies,” he said. “The nation will then know in detail how we intend to move Ghana to a situation Beyond Aid,” he added. The move comes in the wake of the completion of the three-year extended credit facility from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). READ: IMF approves next disbursement under Ghana’s aid deal President Akufo-Addo said the completion of the facility will enable Ghana implement her own policies. “We must turn our back on the old economy, and build a value-added, industrialised economy with modernised agriculture, which is neither victim nor pawn of the world economic order. “Our relations with the world must be characterised by an increase in trade and investment co-operation, not aid. “This is the way to develop healthy relations with other countries, and put Ghanaian products at the high end of the value chain in the global market place, and create jobs for the teeming masses of Ghanaians, particularly the youth.
