He also disagreed with the current constitutional provision where the president must give his assent before a death sentence could be executed. That power has not been exercised in the country for decades.
Mr. Obiri Boahene says “those who kill must be killed when they are arrested because their intent of either stabbing or shooting at their victims is to kill and possibly take away their property so there is no need for the state to entertain them in the society”.
Nana Obiri Boahene was having his take on the killing of the late Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North Constituency in the Eastern Region, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu. The MP was stabbed to death at his private residence on Tuesday.
The lawyer cited for instance, “those who shot the Koala shopping mall attendant had a mentality of shooting to kill so if they are arrested they should be killed; but when such people are convicted, they say the President of the day must sign before the person is killed which is wrong”.
He explained that the “state is pampering criminals and that is why contract killings have been rampant recently”, adding, “I am happy when I hear suspected armed robbers have been killed. They should be fired because there are several murder cases in the country that the suspects have been freed by the court”.
Asked whether that is not the prize of democracy Ghana has chosen, lawyer Obiri Boahene responded in a furious tone, clearly showing his disapproval for that aspect of democracy. It is wrong because such criminals take lives of innocent people only for the law to protect them, he argued.
