Ghana heading into constitutional crisis – General Mosquito

Johnson Asiedu Nketia was addressing NDC supporters[/caption] General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia says the country could be plunged into a constitutional crisis if immediate steps are not taken to resolve the impasse at the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC). The EC is under probe by a committee chaired by the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, following a petition referred to her by President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo. The crux of the petition has to do with three of the commissioners – Chair Charlotte Osei, Dr Ahmadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwah – cited in allegations of misappropriations. But speaking at his party’s final Unity Walk held in Aflao in the Volta Region over the weekend, Mr Asiedu Nketia expressed fears there may be many things left undone by 2020, when the next major elections would be held, given the turn of events. “We have been warned not to speak for fear of being cited for contempt,” he told the teeming party supporters. “If there is anything leading us into crisis, I will prefer to talk about it and risk being cited for contempt than keeping quiet. “Whatever is happening at the EC must happen quickly enough so they can look forward and undertake their activities before Election 2020 because the alternative will be a chaotic election and Ghanaians are not ready for that.” According to Mr Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General Mosquito, finality is even yet to be paid to the 2016 elections in terms of the results being gazetted, let alone preparatory plans for the next general elections starting. “Our EC has been stampeded into a situation of inactivity,” he stressed. “As we speak now, what they need to do to bring the 2016 elections to conclusion to review what went wrong in 2016 has never happened. “And we are moving gradually to the next election, all the preparatory work that ought to be have started two years ago have not been done.” He called on stakeholders to take frantic steps for the impasse to be resolved.
