The demolition exercise, started on Saturday, June 20, has plunged the Chief Executive of the Assembly especially on a collision course with residents of Old Fadama, popularly known as Sodom and Gomorrah.
Residents embarked on a demonstration last Monday, saying the Assembly’s initial plan to demolish only structures 50 meters away from the Korle Lagoon has been traversed.
Chief Executive of AMA Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije on Wednesday, June 24 told Parliament’s Sub-committee on Local Government that the demolition exercise will not affect the original land allocated to settlers from the north.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, the Ga chiefs said the demolition was undertaken at their instance.
“It is clear as we all know that the Lagoon has been choked by human activity as a result of the activities of squatters ad the settlers in the area,” noted Nii Obedru I of the Jamestown stool.
“The practical action which the AMA has undertaken at the instance of the chiefs to avert any future calamity of the magnitude in the clearing of the structures which inhibit the free flow of the water into the Lagoon.”
He pointed out that the land at Adjen Kotoku is not meant for residential purposes but to accommodate the trading activities of northerners.
