Fred Amankwah bows out of  NPP chairmanship race

An aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Fred Amankwah-Sarfo, has backed out of the chairmanship race some hours to the close of nominations for the July elections. Mr. Amankwah-Sarfo, who picked a nomination form earlier in the week, announced in a press conference Thursday, May 10, “We have assessed our chances to this point and decided to graciously postpone our contest”. According to him, he has done an extensive consultation and finds it prudent to withdraw his nomination and contest for another time. He said even though some of his supporters may have held different opinions about his withdrawal, he has been able to convince them. Before this announcement, he had started a massive campaign, promising to build an ultra-modern national headquarters for the party, build and refurbish regional and constituency offices across the country, pay end-of-service benefits (Ex-Gratia), among others. If  the day ends without any other person picking a form to contest the chairmanship, the battle lines would be drawn for Acting National Chairman, Freddy Blay, Stephen Ntim and Alhaji Abubakari Rahman (Alhaji Short) to face off in what many have described as a competitive position. Mr. Amankwah-Sarfo wished the remaining candidates well and urged party members to support the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government to be able to achieve its agenda. Meanwhile, the party has rescheduled its initially announced June 5 national delegates’ conference for a later date. The Director of Elections, Evans Nimako, in an interview with Onua FM’s Bright Kwasi Asempa on Yen Nsempa on Thursday confirmed the postponement and said a new date is yet to be set.
