The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has demolished more than 50 structures on its land at Damfa in the Adentan Municipality of the Greater Accra Region. The seven-hour exercise was done in the presence of armed police officers. As far back as 1960, about 562 hectares of land was secured by Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to be used for agricultural activities including dairy production, and to also serve as steady farm for breeding animals. The land has, however, been encroached by individuals who have put up different structures on it. Most buildings were at various stages of completion without permit. Several notices by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for the encroachers to vacate the area have yielded no result. At about 8:00am Sunday, May 12, a team from the Ministry led by some security personnel visited the area to clear the place. The exercise saw houses and fence walls go down. Press Secretary for the Ministry Issah Ridwan said they are set to deal with illegal occupants of government lands. “The continuous encroachment on the land is defeating the purpose for which it was acquired; hence, we are here to demolish every structure on it and tell the encroachers that enough is enough.” The demolition at Damfa is one of series of demolitions to be executed by Ministry of Food and Agriculture and Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
