North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said that the order to withdraw soldiers who are on a rescue mission in Mepe, one of the areas affected by the flood resulting from spillage of water from Akosombo and Kpong dams, has been reversed.
He had earlier indicated that the soldiers had been asked to leave the community.
“Who ‘above’ has given orders to the military detachment helping us cross flood waters to immediately withdraw when the water levels haven’t receded and when thousands of lives are at stake in camps across these waters?”
“Who in government is behind this utter cruelty?” He tweeted.
But in another tweet, he said “I just received a call indicating that the order has been reversed and that the soldiers have been directed to return with their boats and resume duty.
“Soon, we shall fish out those faceless, unpatriotic elements.”
Earlier, Mr. Ablakwa told TV3’s Naa Ashorkor Mensa-Doku that “The Military have recalled their men on the ground from Mepe. They say they have an order from above to pack up their canoes, which currently convey relief items from volunteers to the camp sites of displaced persons, and leave immediately.”
The residents of Mepe have been displaced by the flood caused by the spillage of water from the two dams. The soldiers have been in the town to help convey relief items to the residents who have been relocated to safe havens.
it would be recalled that the Volta River Authority (VRA), in September commenced what it called “controlled spillage of excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams” to avert a destruction of the dams.
The spillage of the excess water has caused flood in communities within the Volta and Eastern regions.
