With just 16 days into January, Ashanti Region has recorded over ninety fire incidents with three casualties, leaving the rest with various degrees of injury.
The figure is a cumulative number of recorded incidents in the first half of January, a situation the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has described as worrying.
The Service has, therefore, cautioned of a dire situation if the public does not take fire safety protocols seriously.
Speaking on Akoma FM‘s current affairs and political show GhanAkoma Monday, January 16 Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer for the GNFS DO3 Peter Addai explained that “we are just few days into this year but we have recorded over ninety fire incidents with three casualties and other several injuries. We are cautioning the general public to be vigilant and follow all safety protocols to reduce the surging fire incidents in the region”.
The latest incident, which occurred at Apromoase in the Oforikrom Municipality, took the lives an officer with the Anti-Robbery Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, his wife and their three-month old child.
Identified as Sergeant Owusu Asante Baafi, 35, and his wife, Yaa Achiaa, the victims were burnt to death beyond recognition in the Sunday night’s disaster.
DO3 Peter Addai further advised for prompt call to the right numbers of GNFS when fire guts homes and other places to ensure immediate response in order to protect lives and property.
