This comes after two major laboratories in the country including Noguchi Memorial Institute of Medical Research last month confirmed cases of the H5N1 on some poultry farms in the country.
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture sent samples of the cases to Italy for a second opinion on the tests conducted in Accra.
“On June 4, we got the result and the result confirmed that truly it was H5N1,” Minister of Food and Agriculture Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey told journalists on Wednesday, June 10.
The Ministry has, therefore, intensified its ban on the importation of poultry products from some West African countries notably Burkina Faso and Nigeria, where the avian flu has been confirmed to exist among birds.
Containment
The country’s veterinary officers have since last month embarked on a containment exercise, which will see no birds nor eggs brought in or taken out of affected farms.
Authorities say it is still safe to consume poultry products despite the recent development.
