The Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu has asked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to support his claim that 98 per cent of depositors of the collapsed banks have been paid their deposits, with evidence.

He told journalists that the president’s comment cannot be accepted until an audit has been carried out on the purported payment by the government.

Mr Akufo-Addo revealed that the government is spending GH¢21 billion to protect investors and depositors to make sure people do not pay for the irresponsible manner in which the banking sector was managed.

‘Let me repeat this, all those whose savings were in the bank, all those savings have been refunded and paid to the people. The intervention of the Central Bank was to protect their savings because many of the banks that finally went into receivership were about to collapse.

“Their situation was dire and if they had been allowed to collapse, all those deposits would have gone in flames,” he stated.

He said 98% of depositors at the microfinance and savings and loans have also been paid, adding that, the rest would be paid by the end of August 2020.

But reacting to this development, Mr Iddrisu told Journalists Monday August 10 that the government has not been transparent in this matter.

He said : “They are simply not transparent, and, then you had the president himself saying that 98 per cent of depositors have been paid.

“An irony. Why are the same depositors questioning it? If I got money, if I received money I would know.

“There are many of them, so we are further demanding an audit of those depositors who have been paid in order to for us to ascertain whether we can rely on the president’s own so-called 98 per cent.”
