Non-governmental organisation Jana Foundation has condemned the recent report of a supposed marriage between a 12-year-old girl and a 64-year-old traditional priest.

“This disturbing practice not only violates the rights of the girl child but also perpetuates harmful traditional beliefs that undermine gender equality and human rights,” the NGO stated in a press release signed by Programme Officer Adam Lamisi.

It said it is “unacceptable” for such a young girl to be married off instead of being allowed to live a normal life and pursue her education.

It, therefore, called on the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and, indeed, government as a whole to intervene “to rescue the girl from this abusive situation and hold those responsible for this act accountable”.

“It is time to discard these outdated and harmful traditions that continue to harm the future of girls in
Ghana.”

Jana Foundation urged stakeholders to work in order to put an end to such practices and ensure that every child, regardless of gender, is protected and given the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.

It assured of standing in solidarity with the young girl, resolving to advocate for her right and the rights of all girls in Ghana.
