Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, has expressed his willingness to partner the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as his running mate for the 2024 presidential election.

According to the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, he is ever ready to serve his nation in any capacity whenever he is called upon.

“I am here to serve my nation, in any capacity I find myself I will serve this nation,” Dr Adutwum said on Accra-based Citi FM Tuesday, January 09, 2024.

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has also indicated that she is open to partnering the flagbearer of the NPP for the 2024 presidential election.

She said such a call would require much reasoning and consultation which she will apply before taking a final decision, if considered.

Madam Ayorkor Botchwey was speaking to the media after casting her ballot during the super delegates conference of the NPP in August 2023.

“I’ll think about it. It’s not a decision you take lightly so you think about it, you consult, and all of that,” she responded to the question on whether she will accept to be a running mate for any of the candidates.

Several names have since popped up following the election of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flag bearer for the NPP.

They include Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

Although the Article 13 of the party’s constitution requires that the running mate to the flag bearer for a major election where the candidate is not the sitting president, be announced 12 months prior to the poll, Dr Bawumia’s announcment has been postponed.

This was after Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 flag bearer of the party asked for more time to conclude on his choice.

The party leadership had a meeting Wednesday, December 6, 2023, to finalise on the possible persons being considered for the position.

But at a press conference after the meeting, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong announced that the Vice President had asked for more time which has been granted by the National Council.

Dr. Bawumia said he needs further consultations to arrive at a candidate to partner him for the 2024 polls.

According to Mr. Kodua, the Council granted this request and is looking forward to a new date from the flag bearer.
