President Nana Akufo-Addo has been petitioned to intervene in the case involving 20 students whose future is being “jeopardized” because the West Africa Examination Council is refusing to release their results. Not even a court ruling in favour of the candidates is prompting WAEC to bend over backwards to enable the frustrated students take advantage of the Free Senior High School policy enrollment. The proprietor of Teshie-based A-Z Preparatory, Bishop Godwin Aaron Monyo is therefore falling on the president as a last resort to get the children enrolled in school. The petition copied to the Minister of Education, Ghana Education Service and Bureau of National Investigations among others prayed for assistance “in ensuring the future of some twenty (20) pupils will not be in jeopardy”. According to the petition, the A-Z Preparatory presented 40 candidates for the 2017 Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE). But when WAEC released the results, 20 out of the 40 candidates had their English Language results withheld and later cancelled. In February 2018, 17 of them sat the English paper again. The re-sit results were released in the month of May/June 2018, and they all passed with grades such as 1, 2, 3 and 4, the petition said. “Since the release of the result, WEAC has refused to release that of the seventeen candidates to enable them to be placed in various Senior High Schools under the Computerized School Selection Placement System.” This compelled parents of these candidates to take the matter to the Human Rights High Court in Accra and secured judgment in their favour on 4th July 2018. WAEC was therefore ordered by the court to release the results but it went for a stay of execution which was declined on August 12, but it has yet to release the results. When the candidates try to log onto the school placement platform, they are told that they cannot be placed because they obtained grade 9 (fail) in either English or Mathematics. “It has been over a month after the ruling but WAEC has been adamant in releasing the results which is not only putting pressure on parents and guardians of these children, but also jeopardizing the future of these children,” he petitioner reiterated. “The school is by this petition, bringing the issue to the attention of your esteem office for investigations and to prevail on WAEC not to use their excessive institutional power to destroy the future of these young and innocent children.” Bishop Godwin Aaron Monyo also suspects foul play in the grading system of WAEC after a student who had aggregate 16 was given aggregate 31 by WAEC.
