WAEC is the exam-supervising body of Ghana[/caption] The West African Senior Schools Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) will from 2018 be written in May instead of February, the Minister of Education has said. This is part of measures to streamline the education sector under the Free Senior High School policy. Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh announced this on Thursday at a press conference to address recent concerns about the policy. He said the three-year duration for senior high schools does not churn out the best of graduates and so government has decided to extend the period as it mulls a four-year system. The examination for final year SHS students – supervised by the West African Examinations Council (Waec) – begin with practicals for some programmes like the Sciences and Visual Arts as well as orals for the languages in February before the paper-based tests are held in May. But with this new development the practical and oral tests will begin in May, shifting the written tests to a later date. Dr Opoku Prempeh, who is also Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Constituency, announced that government under the policy will pay utility bills for schools. “We have sat down with the utility companies,” he indicated. “We are going to pay [the bills] at source because it looks like schools are collecting it and are not paying.” An additional fund of GH¢80 million has also been released to address the teething challenges that have rocked the policy.
