Tumu Senior High Technical School in the Sissala East Municipality of the Upper West Region has been closed down indefinitely after students rioted on Thursday Night. 3news.com’s Upper West Regional correspondent Yakubu Abdul-Gafur reports that Students during the riot allegedly vandalised the headmaster’s bungalow and that of the assistant headmaster and senior house master, as well as the store room and dining hall. According to eyewitnesses, it all started after school authorities seized mobile phones belonging to some final year students on last Wednesday and destroyed them after holding an emergency assembly meeting in the school. This did not go down well with some of the students leading to one of the students exchanging abusive words with the headmaster, demanding that his mobile phone is given back to him. Some of the students also felt school authorities have been too strict on the final year students writing the WASSCE. For instance, they claimed some items not permitted into the examination hall and were seized from the students infuriated them the more. They therefore planned attack on those in charge of the examinations and the school authorities. Fortunately, targeted members of the school authorities managed to escape before the attackers came, but the unrelenting students visited their anger on properties of the school. The police were called in to help maintain order. About 22 students have been arrested in connection with the riot. The development led to the Ghana Education Service;s decision to indefinitely closed down the Tumu Senior High Technical School. Source: 3news.com | Ghana]]>
