The Director for International Relations & Partnerships at the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Richard Gyamfi has emphasized that every Ghanaian qualifies to be awarded a scholarship regardless of their family’s financial background.

Gyamfi clarified that scholarships are accessible to all qualified Ghanaian nationals who have gained the opportunity to study abroad for personal development, which can subsequently benefit Ghana. He said such applicants are eligible for assistance from the Secretariat which may include persons who might be coming from wealthy homes.

According to Gyamfi, the Board responsible for interviewing the individuals do not engage in conversations on whether or not the persons seeking the scholarship is from a rich home or not.

“There are no laws that disqualify wealthy individuals and their families from applying for scholarships,” he told hosts of Yen Nsempa, Nana Yaa Brefo and JB.

His comments comes at the back of a report by The Fourth Estate uncovering instances where scholarships designated for financially disadvantaged students were awarded to successful politicians and their relatives.

Gyamfi further elaborated on the legal framework, stating that the key requirement for the scholarship is the possession of a valid Ghanaian passport with proof of admission to a foreign educational institution.

In line with efforts to decentralize operations and enhance accessibility, Gyamfi announced that interested individuals can apply through the official application portal at scholarships.gov.gh.

The portal he says is to streamline the application process, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
