Two out of the eight girls of Chiana Senior High School sanctioned by the Ghana Education Service (GES) for insulting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo have expressed gratitude to him for his timely intervention.

Mariam Plange Matteer and Huzaimah Hamidu Daabu told Media General‘s Upper East Region correspondent Rabiu Tanko Mohammed that they are ready to accept any other punishment the Service will mete out to them so far as it keeps them in school.

“First of all, I will like to say ‘Thank you’ to the president. We thank you for intervening in our matter and we are willing to take any punishment that comes along as far as we are going back to school,” said Ms Plange Matteer on Friday, January 13.

“I want to thank the Ghana Education Service for accepting us back as their students. We thank them a lot and we are really happy and we promise them that it will never happen again.”

On her part, Ms Hamidu Daabu thanked “His Excellency the President for intervening in our matter” and promised to accept any punishment the GES metes out now that “it is in the hands of GES”.

The two appeared in a viral video last year, insulting President Akufo-Addo.

They were dismissed after investigations conducted by the Service and in collaboration with Chiana SHS authorities.

But the punishment was deemed as too harsh within some quarters with many asking the Service to rescind its decision.

On Friday, President Akufo-Addo made a timely intervention “after his attention was drawn to it”.

The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, then asked the Service to consider other alternative but corrective punishment against the eight.

It is after this intervention that the two are expressing gratitude to the president and promising to obey any subsequent punishment thereof.

They also advised current students to make judicious use of social media and not to fall victim like they did.
