Stanbic Bank Ghana has demonstrated its commitment to Ghana’s education sector with donations to the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) and the Department of Communication Studies, University of Ghana.

The bank presented a cheque for GH¢75,000 to the UGBS in support of the School’s endowment fund and also presented some 20 new computers to the Department of Communication to furnish its new computer laboratory for PhD students.

The GH¢75,000 donation, according to Manager of Communications at Stanbic Bank Kojo Akoi Larbi, was in recognition of the critical role the UGBS plays in the country and the numerous support, in terms of human resources, to institutions in the banking sector.

“It is an honour to be able to support the Fund with this amount. The request for support wasn’t difficult to consider because as a Bank, we believe in education, which is a key element in our Corporate Social Initiatives. We know Ghana is our home and we drive her by supporting initiatives that are sustainable. We want to support the Business School to help students realize their dreams.  Today’s donation goes to affirm our support for the sector and we hope that it starts the process for other corporate organisations to come on board,” Mr Akoi Larbi said during the presentation of the cheque to the Dean of the UGBS, Professor Justice Bawole.

Adding to Mr Larbi’s remarks, Branch Manager of Stanbic Bank at the University of Ghana Cassandra Dapaah noted the Bank is not only interested in running a viable business, but also interested in giving back to the society.

“Stanbic Bank is interested in impacting the University and the students especially, those who are needy,” she stated.

Prof Bawole, who received the donation on behalf of the school, said Stanbic Bank’s donation will help the School support and provide the needs of its young and brilliant but needy students.

“Since we put up our Endowment Fund, we have struggled a bit to raise funds and that’s why when you get a brand like Stanbic Bank come through, you are happy and we consider it a really good partnership. This donation will help us to move towards our target of GH¢100 million, but most importantly allow us support our young, needy but brilliant students and faculty development,” he noted.

He further called on the various corporate organisations in the country to emulate the kind gesture of Stanbic Bank and support the Endowment Fund.

“I want to appeal to corporate Ghana that, just as Stanbic Bank has done, we are looking forward to seeing other brands, multinationals and local companies come to support the Fund to enable us invest in our students,” he stated.

The Head of Department of the Department of Communications Studies, Dr. Abena Animwaa Yeboah-Banin, on her part, expressed gratitude to the bank and mentioned that the computers will be critical in ushering the school into their new phase of expansion.
