President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has debunked rumours that the University of Environment and Sustainable Development at Somanya would be relocated to Bunso.
He observed that the rumours are being peddled by his opponents and they are unfounded.
He promised supporting Italian construction firm Contracta 2 to complete the €45 million project by July next year.
The president made this known on Thursday at the start of his three-day working visit of the Eastern Region.
The University of Environment and Sustainable Development is still at its construction stages at Somanya.
It is being constructed on a 312-acre land given out by the Yilo Krobo Traditional Authority.
At a durbar to welcome the president to the site, the chief of the area Nene Obadour asked the president – through his spokesperson – his intention on the university project.
He also pleaded with President Akufo-Addo for more police posts and social amenities.
In response, President Akufo-Addo said his visit to the university site was to set the records straight on rumours surrounding the university project.
He denied that some offices were been relocated to Bunso.
“This is the misinformation being peddled by our opponents.”
He took a swipe at his opponent for stoking ethnocentric sentiments about the siting of the university, pledging government’s support to ensure a completion of the project and commended the Italian government for its continuous guarantee.
The university will run general and specialized degrees, including climate change, water resources development, energy sustainability and energy economics and policy.
It will also run urban architecture, natural resources and environmental economics, environmental policy and environmental science courses.
It will have four undergraduate schools – the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, the School of Sustainable Development, the School of Agriculture and Agriculture Entrepreneurship and the School of the Built Environment.
There would be one graduate school which would compromise three research centers made up of the Centre for Agro-Entrepreneurship, the Centre for Agriculture and Biotechnology and the Centre for Sustainable Resource Development.
Roads and Highways Minister Kwesi Amoako-Atta promised government would embark on several different road projects in Somanya, Asesewa and Odumase by the first quarter of 2019.
