Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta says the introduction of the Free Senior High School policy has served as a major relief for parents whose wards have benefitted from the programme.
He made this assertion on Thursday, July 19, when he was presenting the mid-year budget review in Parliament.
According to the Finance Minister, the programme has helped parents save a minimum of GHȻ3,000 and GHȻ 1,950 per student per academic year for boarding and day students respectively.
The programme created favorable circumstances for 362,118 students to be enrolled. Those students, according to the minister, may not have been able to enroll in SHS for lack of funds.
“The Akufo-Addo government has eased the burden of thousands of Ghanaians and invested in the future of our children in our country.”
According to Mr Ofori-Atta, an amount of GHȻ899,524 has been released for the 2017/2018 academic year and adequate allocation has also been made in the 2018 budget to cover the first term of the 2018/2019 academic year.
He further said government has made available resources for Senior High Schools across the country in dealing with some challenges faced by the schools.
