A US-based Ghanaian professor, Kwaku Asare, has noted that the promise made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in their 2020 manifesto regarding legal education in Ghana is a step in the right direction.

Professor Asare who is also a private legal practitioner said the promise indicates that the NDC listens far more than the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, speaking at the NDC’s manifesto launch on Monday September 7  said the government will review and give accreditation to “certified law faculties across the country.”

He said this will increase the number of professional lawyers in the country.

Reacting to this on his Facebook page, Professor Asare said “On the issue of making legal education accessible, it is fair to say NDC has done more listening than NPP and has offered a far superior solution to the problem.

“Universities, not some centralized government school, should be in charge of legal education.”

Law students have over the past few years have encounters with the General Legal Counsel (GLC) over legal education in Ghana

In 2018, the inter faculty law students union of Ghana raised issues against the GLC following what they described as hardship, inconvenience, and massive corruption being visited on them.

In a press statement the student said “The first issue of concern is the leakage of the entrance Exam that was taken on 27/07/19 at the University of Ghana Campus. It is of great concern and so worrying that the pride of the noble profession is tainted with fraud and corruption.

“The examination papers were leaked together with its marking scheme earlier before the date of the exam. It is so worrying and appalling that a body like GLC under their watch will get involved with these sorts of illegalities”
