One of Ghana’s fast-rising young leaders, award-winning communicator and leadership activist, Kabu Nartey, has been honored by the Law Students’ Union of the University of Ghana Faculty of Law for his outstanding contribution to the development of student scholarship, activism and welfare of his colleagues over the 2021-2022 academic year.
The Kufuor Scholars Fellow 2019 emerged winner of agreeably the most keenly contested Most Versatile Law Students of the Year award category at the UG LSU Annual Leavers’ Dinner held in Accra. The category featured 6 astute young law students including mooters and leaders who have contributed to student leadership and the faculty at both national and international levels.
Over the past year, Kabu Nartey has embarked on academic activism including publications; moot competitions; legal advocacy, and leadership activism at both faculty and the SRC fronts.
Kabu Nartey was a key member of the team that qualified and won the 2022 National Championship of the Philip C Jessup International Moot Competition. Although the team could not progress to the advanced stages of international rounds, he emerged as the Best Oralist on individual scores in the UG team.
The 2019 GJA Student Journalist of the Year has also published a couple of legal papers and articles on constitutional and administrative laws, famous among them is Did the Living Organism Die ; the Whereabout of Ghana’s Past Constitutions reviewed by former Editor of the James Cook University Law Journal, Professor Alexander Harrison Amankwah; and Constitutional Interpretation; A Peep into the Judges mind ( to be published in the UGSol Student Law Journal).
He also played an important part in founding and leading Lex Apex Associates, a student law firm to win the just-ended Bentsi-Enchill, Letsa and Ankomah Moot Court Competition organized at the UGSol.
Weeks ago, to the admiration of all dignitaries present, he interviewed Court of Appeal judge and prolific Ghanaian jurist, Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei in the UGSol Maiden Booktalk on his recent land law book. In attendance was the Deputy Attorney General of the Republic Mr Alfred Tuah-Yeboah
The level 300 Post First Degree Law Student was a local authority on the legal impasse surrounding the UG SRC Election Petition Hearing 2021-2022. In his capacity as the Law Students Representative to the UG SRC General Assembly, Kabu authored and co-authored a number of articles and student legal opinions on the rulings by the SRC Judicial Board, providing insight into proceedings. Standing vindicated, Kabu cautioned the parties to respect the SRC Constitution and its Judiciary and to uphold them at all cost since it they are the fulcra on which their justice lay, and rightly so the Court directed parties to such ends. He was a regular pundit on Radio Univers to educate the larger student body about the proceedings and student legal issues.
Kabu Nartey was grateful to his teeming supporters, his academic mentor, Dr. Theodore Adimazoya and all faculty members who continue to encourage him.
The Most Versatile Law Students’ award is also to appreciate students who are able to juggle extracurricular activities to better themselves and to make the faculty and school proud.
