The investiture and induction ceremony for Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni as the new Vice Chancellor of the University Of Education, Winneba is likely not to come off as scheduled following a notice of a pending injunction before an Accra High court. A group identified as ‘Concerned Staff, Students and Members of the General Public’ has said it has applied for an “ interlocutory injunction against the University of Education, Winneba and the Governing Council of the university to restrain them from holding or carrying on with the investiture and induction of Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni as the Vice-Chancellor of the university”. Prof. Afful-Broni was appointed the substantive Vice Chancellor of the University by the Governing Council early September and to be inducted on a later date. His appointment followed the investigations and subsequent dismissal of the then Vice Chancellor, Professor Mawutor Avoke, who was hauled before the University Council Disciplinary Board for allegations of indiscipline. Prof. Mawutor and four others, who were also dismissed, have since gone to court to challenge their dismissal.
But the group said Prof Afful-Broni’s appointment was inundated with some controversies that need to be settled before any induction ceremony could be held. They explained that their motivation to seek an injunction is as a result of “illegalities, procedural improprieties and the politics of vindictiveness, bias and secrecy surrounding the appointment of Rev. Fr. Anthony Afful-Broni into a high public office”. They have therefore cautioned the university authorities, the executive, the legislature and all persons interested, directly or indirectly in the investiture and induction, to abstain from holding or attending the said ceremony until the court finally determines the application for an injunction. They have also noted that it is a contempt of court for the ceremony to be held ahead of the court’s determination on the matter.
