The Ministry of Communications has called on teachers, parents and the general public to encourage girls to take interest in the study of science subjects and consider careers in ICT even as Ghana gets ready to mark the National Girls in ICT DAY on Monday, May 27, 2019 as a member state of the International Telecommunication Union. A statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry states that the celebration which is under the theme, ‘Expanding Horizon and Changing Attitudes’ is part of fulfilling its mandate to promote access to ICT among girls and teachers in Ghana. The National Girls in ICT Day is earmarked to create a global arena that inspires and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies (ICTs). The Communications Ministry says this is apt as it is the time to kick off an important discussion on whose future it can impact with ICT. This year’s event is being held at the Takoradi Technical University in the Western Region. Already, 560 junior high school students, selected from nine districts in the Western Region, have been trained in selected ICT programmes with an award scheme for the best performing ten students. The training was done concurrently in the various districts with 50 trainers provided by the Ghana Education Service, Afiba Consult and the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC). On Sunday, May 26, women role models selected from the country’s ICT sector will interact with and give motivational talks to the students on the growing and rewarding careers in ICT as the sector is marked by a pressing need for a wide range of ICT talents. “It is also important for employers to make a deliberate effort to hire female ICT experts who can take up leadership roles in the country’s ICT sector,” the statement said.
