Four basic school pupils, a teacher and three community members totaling eight, are battling life threatening injuries from a collapsed school building.

The injured are currently receiving treatment at the Adeiso District Hospital in the Eastern Region.

The eight victims are participants and observers at the ongoing Domeabra Zonal Inter School Sports in the Upper West Akim District in the Eastern Region.

The Domeabra Zonal Vice Chairman, John Priestly Badu, explained that the sporting event for the day was ongoing at the Sukrung Awemfi D A primary grounds until it rained, forcing them to seek shelter in the sorry state school building.

Hours later, about 4:30pm, the victims were caught up in the collapse of three classrooms, classes one to three.

Rescue efforts by teachers and residents resulted in the victims being rushed to the Adeiso Health Centre for emergency healthcare.

“We were having our sports this week, it was raining, so they had to seek shelter in that dilapidated classroom. Unfortunately, it fell on them. We have written severally to the MP and DCE to fix that school, but we haven’t had favourable response.”

He added, “We are with the victims at the Adeiso District Hospital, they are receiving care, it is a serious situation.”

The Gyasehene Edward Kotey and Mbrantihene Edem Atiemo are also with the victims at the Adieso District Hospital at the time of filing this report at 6pm on February 14.
