The lives of pupils and teachers at the Ejisu state experimental school are threatened by a dilapidated classroom block.
School authorities fear a looming disaster if urgent steps are not taken to rehabilitate the block accommodating pupils from class one to three.
From a distance, the classroom infrastructure of the Ejisu state experimental school seems to be in good shape.
But the situation appears different when one enters into the various classrooms. Classes one to three are in a terrible state.
The roofing leaks badly, making it impossible for teaching and learning anytime it rains.
Portions of the roof are falling apart, posing danger to the pupils and teachers.
A teacher, Georgina Boampong, is scared at the state of the classroom block.
“Classroom activities have to come to a halt whenever it rains. We get scared anytime there is a downpour because we think the roofing may fall on us. The state of our classroom is in urgent need of repair before any disaser strikes”, she told TV3.
A 3-unit classroom block, which was started by the Member of Parliament for Ejisu, Owusu Aduomi, has stalled for the past five years.
Schools authorities say efforts to access financial assistance to complete the project has yielded no result.
The school is also faced with the challenge of inadequate tables and chairs. The situation has compelled three pupils to sit on dual desks to study.
A native of Ejisu, Ntim Twumasi Kwaku, has assisted the school with fifty dual desks to relieve them of the challenge.
The philanthropist is hopeful his support to the school will enhance teaching and learning.
“The provision of these dual desks is based on request by the headmaster of the school. I believe this will reduce some of the challenges even though it may not be enough”.
The headmaster of the school, Owusu Hamilton, lauded the timely intervention by the philanthropist.
He called on the government to provide the school with adequate infrastructure for effective teaching and learning.
“The school is struggling with infrastructural challenge and this affects effective teaching and learning process. We hope the government comes to our aid”.
