File photo: Teachers using a tree shade as staff common room.[/caption] It has emerged that some communities in the Volta Region of Ghana contribute money to pay for the services of ‘pupil teachers’ of basic schools in their locality that do not have government employed teachers. Former Volta Regional Minister under the John Mahama-led government, Helen Adjoa Ntoso, who revealed this Tuesday said there are a number of schools in those rural communities without qualified teachers. Against this background, she said the people in those communities resolved to find alternative means, hence liaised with the Youth Employment Agency from which people are employed as teachers for the communities to contribute to their salaries. She explained the contribution by the communities is geared towards improving the standard of education in the rural areas. Speaking on Ghana Dwadwene on Accra-based Onua FM, Ms Ntoso observed some qualified teachers posted to some of these communities do not even teach and pretend to be teaching when they get information that that a supervisor will be visiting there. According to her, circuit supervisors in the region do not have motorbikes for their monitoring of teacher, noting the situation was so critical that she had to buy motorbikes for them. Ms who is the MP for Krachi East has meanwhile called on the Monitoring and Evaluation Minister to make the monitoring of teachers a priority so that they sit up and teach effectively to bring back the falling standard of education in the country.
