Deputy Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has said the government took the best decision not to allow parents visit their wards in schools as part of the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

He told Alfred Ocansey on the Sunrise morning show on 3FM 92.7 Wednesday that allowing parents to have access to their wards on campus would double the risk of the children contracting coronavirus.

Minister of Education Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh had said on Tuesday, June 2 that there shall be no form of religious activity in schools once they reopen, following President Nana Akufo-Addo’s relaxation of the Covid-19 restrictions.

This is to prevent the virus from further spreading, he said, at a press conference in Accra.

“When schools reopen, they will not be available for religious activities. It is simple. We do not want too many interactions so that we can trace who might have come to the school with the virus. So, we want to keep it that only students and their lecturers are in school.

“When the junior and senior high schools reopen, there will be no visitors allowed during the period that they are in school. Parents can no longer go and visit their kids for that period,” Dr Opoku Prempeh said.

Explaining further, Dr Yaw Adutwum said: “The unintended consequences of the parents visiting their children can cause more harm and therefore a decision was made.

‘I am sure and I know that this decision wasn’t made lightly.

“In life sometimes you make very uncomfortable decisions and so we want [parents] to bear with us and make sure we all eliminate that risk coming from the outside totally [and] the number of other risk items that we have to deal with.”
