The Electoral Commission (EC) has set Tuesday, April 9, for an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting with political parties to address some pending issues.
The meeting comes on the back of calls from the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for the EC to meet the parties to update them on the issues of missing laptops and the return of some outstanding Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).
According to the EC’s invitation letter to the parties, the agenda for the meeting includes the upcoming voter registration exercise, the Ejisu by-elections, and an update on the commission’s biometric equipment, amongst any other related concerns.
Reacting to the letter from the EC on News360, the deputy general secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, said EC’s decision to honour their request is “in good faith” and that the party is grateful.
“The thrust of the matter is that there have been issues that have to do with tempering, as far as peeling of machines is concerned and we are determined that we can use prescribed standards and tools to resolve that matter,” he said, adding that EC’s press conferences and statements were enough to address issues of inventory or stocking.
He said, “It is about reconciliation so that stakeholders can all be clear in their minds that the missing machines will not be in the hands of wrong people that will jeopardise or temper the credibility and integrity of any electioneering process.”
The party is hopeful the April 9 meeting will address these and any other concerns.
