The Eastern Regional Forestry Director, Isaac Adonten, has described the Green Ghana Day as a revolution that everyone must be part of.

He made this known at the ceremonial tree planting exercise held at Akwamu in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.

The ceremonial planting for the Eastern Region was done by Akwamuhene Odenehu Kwafo Akoto.

The Green Ghana Day would see some seven forest districts under the Forestry Department supervise the planting of 750,000 and more seedlings in the Eastern Region.

The exercise championed by the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry is to increase the nation’s forest cover.

Mr Adonten noted rural folks largely depend on the forest.

Unfortunately, some citizens are recklessly destroying the forest resources.

“We are on this day starting a revolution, a green revolution, all must join in the revolution.”

The Member of Parliament for the Asuogyaman Constituency, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, lauded the sector minister for the exercise but pointed out the nurturing and sustenance of the seedlings planted was critical beyond the funfair.

“I commend the initiative, it is even more the reason Parliament didn’t sit today. By my simple calculations, the Asuogyaman District must plant 30,000 seedlings out of the 750,000 targeted for the region, if we share it all among all the 33 MMDCEs in the Eastern Region. We must have plans to nurture and make sure the trees survive beyond today’s funfair.”

The Eastern Region Minister, Seth Acheampong, urged the MMDCEs to own the project and pledged his determination to make Koforidua a green hub.

He appealed to all stakeholders to engage in discussions on restoring the environment.

“May we rise to the clarion call, grab a seedling and go to plant a tree. We do not want to see any ground bare but all bare lands covered with greens.”

He expressed worry human activities have led to the depletion of the forest cover that has resulted in global warming and climate change with its debilitating effects on the environment.

“We are in difficult times and we need to take drastic measures in solving the cancer of the environmental degradation.”
