Ningo Prampram Lawmaker, Samuel Nartey George has dismissed assertions by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) that the Charging Entities have not integrated with the E-levy Management System.
He said it is rather the GRA that is not prepared to provide the entities the requisite connections in the required time frame to do their work.
The GRA on Thursday April 28 modified the phased-approach for the implementation of the e-levy starting May 1.
In a statement, the GRA said “Following the Ghana Revenue Authority’s assessment of the general readiness of some Charging Entities to integrate with the E-levy Management System, the Commissioner General has decided on a modified phased approach for the implementation of the e-levy from 1st May.”
Speaking on the News @10 on TV3, Sam George who is also a member of the Communications Committee of Parliament said “I put out the fact that the GRA will not be able to roll out the e-levy as they claimed it will.
“The reason why they are unable to roll it out is not the reason they are giving, it is not the preparedness of the charging entities, it is the unpreparedness of the of the GRA to provide the charging entities the requisite connection within the required time frame to do the work.”
The e-levy is expected to start on May 1.
“We had some meetings with Controller and Accountant Generals Department (CAGD) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and they have said right at the beginning of May they should be able to put their system together,” the Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta told TV3’s Roland Walker in Parliament after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo delivered the State of the Nation Address on Wednesday March 30.
The E-levy was passed by Parliament on Tuesday March 29 after the third reading in the House. The Minority staged a walkout during the second reading. They walked out after their leader Haruna Iddrisu said the NDC MPs remained united in opposing the policy.
On Tuesday April 19 the Minority in Parliament filed an application at the apex court to block the commencement of the e-levy deductions.
Hearing of the application will take place on May 4.
