Business owners are bearing the brunt of the current flooding in the Dzemeni Community located in the South Dayi Constituency of Volta region.

This flooding is a result of the overflow of the Volta River. Many have lost their livelihoods as homes, facilities and shops are submerged in water.

The community, with over 24,000 residents, has seen in excess of 1000 persons displaced, with many losing their livelihoods as a result.

Florence Dotse, a mother of four, is only one amongst many whose shops have been submerged.

A widow as she is, she strived on her own to open up a business to fend for her family without much support.

But now the same business she fought to maintain is destroyed.

She only woke up one morning to the news of her shop taken over by the flood and she could barely save any of her goods. Sadly, she had taken a loan of GHC100,000 to stock her shop.

“I took a loan to start my business before the floods, but I’ve lost everything. I am so disturbed”, Florence said.

She is now jobless and has no means of survival.

“I have lost a lot of money, i am no longer working. I have four children so it’s difficult for me to look after them.”, she said.

Indeed, many in the community are suffering the same ordeal, if not worse.

Sadly, no one has come to their aid since the floods began.

An Assembly man in the community John Abotsi in an interview with TV3, explained that “No one has come here. NADMO directors came here twice without any help. Everyone is concentrated on North Tongu, Sogakofé and neighbouring districts.”

The community is in need of urgent help and is calling on government to come to their aid.
