Electoral officers admitted that even though the NHIS cards have been ruled out for electoral activities, they helped them identify the correct spelling of the names of voters in the register in the absence of a voter’s card.
TV3’s Yakubu Abdul Gafur reported that at the Wa Post Office polling station ‘A’, out of a total of 650 registered voters, only 179 persons had voted with three hours to close polls.
A young man later popped up with an NHIS card, our reporter says, but he was allowed to go through the verification process without any hindrance.
According to the electoral officer, Zakaria Abdul Moomin, some of the voters had misplaced their cards and are unable to remember their names accurately for the officers to find them in the register.
Therefore, most of them were asked to come with some form of identification card to make the process easier.
But heavy rains halted the entire exercise.
