Directive to Shutdown: GBC runs to NMC for 'urgent intervention'

The Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor Amin Alhassan, has written to the National Media Commission (NMC) for “urgent intervention” over a directive from the Minister of Communications to reduce the state broadcaster’s otal number of channels on the national digital terrestrial television (DTT) network. The letter dated Tuesday, July 7, 2020 was written upon the express instructions of the board of governors. It comes in the wake of a directive from Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful for GBC to reduce its channels on the national DTT network from six to three. Already, this directive has incurred the wrath of the Minority members of the Communications Committee of Parliament. Led by Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Sam Nartey George, the Minority members on Wednesday, July 15 questioned the authority of Mrs Owusu-Ekuful to direct GBC to shut down three of its channels. In his letter to the NMC, Prof Alhassan explained that executing the directive of the Communications Minister will have far-reaching consequences on the state broadcaster, among which is possible collapse of the entire public service broadcatser.
