A group calling itself the Coalition for Defense for Equal Citizenship (CODEC) has marched in the country’s capital, Accra, to drum home the need for all Ghanaians to have a say in the way forward regarding the voters’ register.
It also called on all stakeholders to uphold the independence of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) in finding a solution to the seeming impasse that has characterised the way forward.
Members of the group marched along some principal streets of Accra, holding placards.

Some of the placards read: “Leave EC boss to do her work”, “Let’s protect the independence of EC”, “Credible register not a new register” and “One Ghana under One God”.
“What we want to do is to reinforce that constitutional belief that the independence of the Electoral Commission must at all times be maintained and that we should allow the EC to do its work as permitted by the constitution,” said Godwin Tamakloe, Convener for CODEC, on Wednesday, October 28.

He said whatever suggestions that have been tabled, electorates should also be given the chance to add their voices.
“So far the discussion has been limited to the political parties,” Mr Tamakloe pointed out.
“We want every single Ghanaian to begin to have a say in this whole discussion.”
The group condemned the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which sparked debate on the register, over what it says are attempts to bar some “qualified” voters from exercising their franchise.
Some of the placards, as a result, attacked the largest opposition party.
“Ewes are Ghanaians”, “NPP stop dividing Ghana” and “Even British Gabby is a Ghanaian” are some of the placards directed at the NPP.
The EC has constituted a five-member committee to compile all proposals on the voters’ register at a two-day forum for stakeholders.
