Although there had been reports of a court injunction a day before Saturday, delegates still turned up in their numbers at the venue.
TV3’s Western Regional Correspondent, Eric Adjei, quoted some delegates as saying they received text messages from some constituency executives assuring them that voting would go ahead.
One Joseph Mensah, an employee of the Takoradi Port, who is contesting the incumbent, Joe Badu Ansah, sought the injunction after the party’s appeals committee attempted to disqualify him.
Allegations are that there are fraudulent issues surrounding his membership in the party, a claim he vehemently denies.
The man who is nearing his sixties, is seeking to unseat Joe Badu Ansah, who is seeking a fifth term bid in Parliament.
Under heavy security presence on Saturday, the Western Regional Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Steve Opoku Mensah, announced to delegates that the commission had been duly notified of the court injunction barring them from going ahead with the process.
Disappointed delegates started complaining as they dispersed from the venue. The incumbent MP Joe Badu Ansah, addressed delegates and urged them to remain calm as the issues are resolved for a new date to be announced.
Voting
Meanwhile voting went ahead in six constituencies on Saturday. The opposition NPP’s primaries, majority of which have taken place last month, are yet to be completed due to internal party disagreements some of which have landed in court.
Aside the Kwesimintsim suspension, Korle Klottey in the Greater Accra Region, could not come off. Philip Addison, one of the lead contenders, is demanding the disqualification of his main contender, Nii Noi Nortey, a former constituency chairman.
The six that voted are Tema West and Central in the Greater Accra Region; Obom-Domeabra in the Central Region; Kintampo North in the Brong Ahafo Region; Juaben in the Ashanti Region and a run-off in Gomoa East in the Central Region.
The hotbed of activity will be at the Tema West Constituency, where incumbent Irene Naa Torshie Addo is being challenged by Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah and Adwoa Amoako.
The Okai Kwei South constituency in the Greater Accra Region together with a few others will hold their primaries later due to some legal issues.
