The General Secretary of the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA), Nana Adu Gyamfi Mensah, has hinted at an imminent strike and demonstration by service personnel within the public sector over their two-month outstanding allowance.
Adu Gyamfi, in an interview on Accra-based Joy News, underscored the challenges service personnel are going through financially, stating that the situation is worrying. The personnel have received allowances for only two months of the four-month arrears.
He said, “The delayed payment is a worry to us because as graduates, our parents somehow want us to be fending for ourselves so most of us depend on the allowance. If it delays, we really get worried.”
“With the concerns about allowance, we had about four unpaid allowances with two months settled. This is not something that must happen. We are telling the scheme and government that this is unacceptable.
“In the coming days, after probably our last meeting with the board and government, we will announce our next line of action, which is to call for a strike and subsequently a demonstration,” he added.
He complained that the delay in distributing the allowances has become the norm, causing immeasurable suffering for graduates who rely on the stipend as their only source of income. To avoid a strike, the association demands quick payment.

This comes after National Service personnel in the public sector have complained about their inability to meet basic demands as the delay in payment of their monthly stipend continues.
These allowances are occasionally delayed for several months before being paid to graduates who are completing the one-year required service.
